Volunteer with the Ghent Neighborhood League!
The Ghent Neighborhood League is interested in having you Volunteer with us! Most positions require only a few hours a month and go a long way towards enabling us to achieve community improvements and project goals. Some of the committees are more social in nature, others focus on beautification and conservation and still others work on historic preservation or community services. There is something for everyone.
Listed below are our committees and volunteer descriptions. At the bottom of the list is a volunteer form to fill out and let us know which volunteer position interests you. Someone will contact you shortly to work on finding you a place in your chosen focus. We look forward to seeing you and making a difference together!
Project Review Committee
Committee Description: The Project Review Committee coordinates with GNL members and the City of Norfolk on issues related to historic zoning and preservation.Some of the committee’s duties include reviewing proposal submission packages, conferring with fellow committee members and making recommendations that align with the neighborhood’s historical foundations, adjusted for today’s time.
Expected level of commitment: 2-5 hours a month
Community Improvement Committee
Committee Description: The Community Improvement Committee collaborates on maintenance and enhancement of streets, sidewalks, signs, streelights and green spaces. Duties include communicating with GNL members and the City on repair items needed, establishing expected repair timeframes and keeping membership appraised of any changes to the repair plans/schedules.
Organize and implement ‘Neighborhood Walks’ (at least 2x a year, Fall and Spring) to collectively identify issues/needed improvements and initiate needed attentions.
Expected level of commitment: Fluctuates by initiative and season
Membership Committee
Committee Description: The Membership Committee concentrates on recruiting and registering new members while helping promote the Ghent Neighborhood League. Duties might include reaching out to local businesses, manning membership tables at local events, maximizing special recruitment events, creating and running contests designed to boost membership and creative collaboration with other Ghent organizations and non-profits.
Expected level of commitment: Varies by activity
Program Committee
Committee Description: The program committee assists the President in identifying content and speakers to present to the GNL. We are looking for members who are interested in programmatic and content related topics as they seek out exciting ways to inform, collaborate and increase the overall residential experience of members. Volunteers will actively engage prospective speakers, staying abreast of developments that impact the neighborhood and preparing speaker material for integration into larger meeting presentations.
Expected level of commitment: 2-5 hours a month
Events Committee
Committee Description: Volunteers will help create events and implement events. Some of the events will focus on membership growth, others on specific topics (preservation or history) and many if not most will be for pure fun and community togetherness. We have lots of ideas for this committee and are looking for enthusiastic individuals and great ideas!
Expected level of commitment: 2-5 hours a month, more on event days
