We are interested in your ideas and opinions and are delighted when our members participate in and volunteer for our many projects. We’re so glad you’re a member and look forward to your input.

On the website be sure to check out our upcoming events calendar. We’ve got a lot planned as we pivot the GNL in new directions and we can’t wait to have you join us in these new initiatives and get-togethers.

Please come to the monthly meetings. They meet on the third Wednesday of every month at The Williams School (419 Colonial Avenue) and start with a social half-hour at 6:00. There are a lot of good ideas cooking in those meetings and we want you to be there!

A Note from our President:

Welcome to the Ghent Neighborhood League! I am very excited that you have decided to join our team. It is my desire to have a proactive and diverse membership working together to enhance the overall quality of life in Ghent. For sixty years GNL has collaborated with residents, local businesses, and community partners to ensure a friendly and thriving neighborhood. It is our goal to build on the past, but also pursue new avenues to ensure Ghent is integral to Norfolk’s and Virginia’s future.

To achieve this goal the GNL has identified five key priorities. These are:

1. Community Engagement: We aim to increase GNL participation in Norfolk government and community events and gatherings that celebrate our shared values, foster meaningful connections and advocate for our neighborhood.

2. Historic Preservation: Ghent is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Maintaining the historic nature of Ghent but planning for a future community is foundational to this neighborhood. This is more than preserving buildings, it is also quality of city infrastructure maintenance and improvement projects. Ghent is a unique neighborhood, and our purpose is both to protect and celebrate it.

3. Sustainability and Green Initiatives: We are committed to promoting sustainable practices and preserving the charm of our historic neighborhood. GNL will sponsor various green initiatives, community gardens, and conservation efforts.

4. Education and Information Sharing: We will keep a current homepage (gnl.squarespace.com) that provides the latest neighborhood news and events, government links, partners information and more. Additionally, monthly GNL meetings include invited guests addressing the latest law enforcement statistics and other local issues. These are excellent opportunities to ask questions and stay informed.

5. Social Events and Festivities: It is not all work and no fun. We will host GNL social events and festivities.

Once again, welcome to the GNL. GNL meets the third Wednesday of every month at the Williams School,at 6:30pm, preceded by a member social at 6:00pm EST.
